These are books from my bookshelf connected with the walk about Wales and the Welsh language, about walking historical and current, about maps and geography. Some I have had for many years and some I was given this Christmas. I have not read them all (yet) … but for those I don’t manage before the walk I will have three and half months to catch up! I missed this when it was on TV, but got the DVD for Christmas. Amazing photography, and full of things I never knew before, including the oldest ceremonial burial in Western Europe in the Gower, and an enormous copper mine in Great Worms Head Llandudno. Despite spending all my schooling in Cardiff, I find I know almost nothing of Welsh history except Llewelyn and Gelert. Why so long studying post-Norman conquest kings and not medieval welsh princedoms?

A documentary style of writing of the 'past, present and future' of Machynlleth, past and perhaps future capital of independent Wales, from the parliament of Owen Glyndwr (past), to an imagine future seat of a government of a future (somewhat utopian) independent Wales. The 'present' is odd to read written before the establishment of the Welsh Assembly, and it is also somewhat unsettling reading the description of the town and sites that have been were made so vivid recently following the abduction of April Jones.

Wonderful romp of a book … although at 1 mile an hour in the early stages, not necessarily a physical romp! A plain speaking northern lass, sets out on the South West Path, never intending to travel the whole way round - makes me feel well planned.
