During the walk I am collecting for a number of charities, that in different ways have personal meaning, Welsh connections, and touch upon themes of the walk.

MHA – provides care for the elderly across the UK, and has a number of homes and centres around the coast of Wales centred around Colwyn Bay in the North, Aberystwyth in the West and Penarth in the South.  I will visit some of these during my walk.  The UK, like most western counties, has an ageing population, and yet it is often the older generation who are most excluded in digital society.

The Wallich –  a Cardiff-based charity with projects all over Wales addressing homelessness, a growing problem in times of recession and shrinking state provision.  I am walking through choice, but across Wales, the UK and the world there are many who are homeless or on the road through personal circumstances, illness, persecution and war  (see also “February Travels“). The Wallich particularly deal with those who have in some way fallen out of mainstream support, very much those at the margins.

Tenovus – a cancer charity based in Cardiff, which both funds world-leading research and provides practical cancer support throughout Wales.  My mum was a long term supporter of Tenovus, and died during an operation related to bowel cancer, so this is particularly close to my heart.  In addition, I like the way that Tenovus is making both a ‘big’ global impact through its research activity and yet also addressing on local needs, very much reflecting many of the themes of the walk.
